My Big Fat Greek Crafty Tour RECAP

I'm just back from an incredible trip in Greece with Christine of PeaceTree Fiber Adventures. We spent a week in Athens and Sounio, taking (and teaching!) workshops and visiting amazing historical sites. Here are some of the highlights:

Arrival! Christine and I got in a day early and met with our amazing travel agent, Talya, and our gal-on-the-ground, Christa, who took us to a wonderful dinner and gave us a quick tour of the neighborhoods in Athens.

Welcome Dinner! The knitters arrived and we got to know each other at a welcome dinner under a beautiful moon and the lit-up Acropolis.

First Full Day: A visit to the Benaki Museum where we had a special lecture and workshop with a world renowned Greek jewelry designer. Then, we had some free time and visited a yarn shop, cord shop, and a store selling gorgeous handmade jewelry and clothing. In the evening, we learned how to weave using vertical table looms and made wool coasters.

Day Two: We had a tour of the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum - what a place to knit! Afterwards, we went to the Attic Black pottery studio and tried our hands at the Attic Black pottery technique. Our finished tiles are going to be mailed to us and I can't wait to see how they come out!

Day Three: A fabulous tour at the Oracle at Delphi, followed by a delicious lunch overlooking a stunning Greek landscape. We were all about the Evil Eye on this trip! Christa made us tote bags for the adventure.

Day Four: Before leaving Athens for Sounio, we had a food tour and it was AMAZING! We learned a lot about the neighborhoods in Athens, the history of Greece, and, most importantly, how delicious the right baklava can be.

Our hotel in Sounio was on the beach at the bottom of Poseidon's Temple. I could have spent a full week there just beachcombing. We took a knitting workshop with Kangaroo Yarns in traditional Greek patterns, toured the site of Poseidon's Temple (another great place to knit!), and had a marble mosaic workshop.

We also worked on some of the projects I'd organized for the trip. Many of the attendees made their crochet chain necklaces and evil-eye embroidered keychains.

Our goodbye dinner was delicious, and we were lucky enough to be treated to a surprise fireworks show from a nearby wedding.

This trip to Greece was one-of-a-kind and I am so glad that I got to be a part of it.

I can't wait for the next trip - I hope you'll be on it!
